This work is a playful exploration of our relationship with the natural environment. An extension of ‘Follow the river’, the layering of landscapes from the Hollyford track (New Zealand) with simple geometric shapes in block colours encourages the viewer to move between the detailed digital image and the abstract representation.
In the early stages of this project I experimented with printing the images on tracing paper, and then placing coloured shapes underneath. I wanted to layer the images, and to create a sense of depth, with the softness of the translucent paper contrasted against the simple blocks of colour. My original plan was to create hand-made pieces, stitched together into a book. However, I was unhappy with the finish, as the glue could be seen through in the top layer and warped the paper! So, instead I settled on creating the final images digitally.
